Overview: What is Aluminum Extrusion?
Aluminum extrusion is a manufacturing process that forces heated aluminum alloy through a shaped die to create profiles with a constant cross-section. It is widely used in industries such as construction, automotive, aerospace, electronics, and renewable energy. The process produces lightweight, strong, and corrosion-resistant profiles in virtually unlimited shapes, from simple angles and channels to complex multi-void custom designs.
The aluminum extrusion process starts with an aluminum billet that is preheated to around 400-500°C and pressed through a precision-machined steel die. The extruded profile is then cooled by air or water quenching, stretched to correct any distortion, and cut to length. Further steps include aging to the required temper (T5 or T6), precision machining, and surface finishing such as anodizing or powder coating. This versatility makes aluminum extrusion one of the most cost-effective ways to produce complex, high-precision metal profiles at any scale, serving everything from window frames and heat sinks to machine enclosures and solar mounting systems.
