Overview: What is 5-Axis CNC Machining?

5-axis CNC machining moves a cutting tool or workpiece across five axes at the same time: the three linear axes (X, Y, Z) plus two rotational axes. This lets the cutter approach the part from almost any direction, so complex contours, deep pockets and angled features are completed in a single setup.

The practical benefit is accuracy. Every time a part is unclamped and re-fixtured, a small error is introduced. By removing those extra setups, 5-axis machining keeps every feature referenced to the same datum, which is why it is the standard approach for aerospace structures, impellers, medical implants and mould cores. It also allows shorter cutting tools, which reduces deflection and produces a better finish on steep walls. The milling machine’s movements are guided by a computer program, allowing for precise control over the cutting process. This results in high levels of accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency when producing complex parts.
