What Low-Volume Manufacturing Does

The bridge between a one-off prototype and a million-piece production run.

Bridge production is for volumes where tooling cost must stay low but the part has to be representative of the production geometry and finish. Injection moulds can take six months and 50 to 100 thousand dollars; for many product launches, that commitment is too early.

When to use it

Choose low-volume manufacturing for pilot production, market testing, hard tooling launch delays, regulatory submissions that need full-volume data, and spare parts where the production run has ended and the tooling is gone.

Routes Used

Each low-volume route has its own sweet spot; we pick the route that fits the volume window and the resin or finish in production.

Aluminium Rapid Tooling

Mould inserts machined in aluminium with cooling, ready in two to four weeks. 5 to 30 thousand pieces per tool.

Vacuum Casting

Silicone tools cast from master models. Cosmetic and light-duty engineering parts in 10 to 100 piece runs.

CNC Process Replicas

Same geometry, same stock, same inspection as the production part for the entire run.

How It Compares

For volumes up to roughly ten thousand pieces, low-volume routes are usually 20 to 60 percent cheaper per part than amortising hard tooling across a short production run.

Design Rules That Keep Soft Tooling Cheap

  • Uniform wall thickness reduces moulding stress and lets the cooling lines run on simple paths.
  • Generous drafts of 1 to 2 degrees on vertical faces shorten the cycle and lengthen tool life.
  • Spec-in the resin that will run in production; substitute grades raise the engineering risk and the prototype cost.
  • Match the surface finish on the master to the finish the production part needs.
  • Group features that share the same sliding direction so the part can be ejected straight from the mould.
