Bead blasting drives fine glass bead media at a part under controlled pressure to clean, deburr and unify its surface. It removes tool marks and light burrs without cutting the metal, which makes it the safest finish for parts with tight tolerances. Unity Manufacture blasts CNC machined parts, sheet metal and extrusions, either as a final cosmetic finish or as preparation before anodizing or powder coating.

What sets Unity Manufacture’s bead blasting service apart?

  1. Measured Roughness: Surface roughness is verified against the Ra value on your drawing instead of judged by eye, using calibrated media and pressure.
  2. No Dimensional Drift: Glass and ceramic beads peen rather than cut, so there is no measurable material removal on standard cycles and tight bores stay in tolerance.
  3. Media Matched to Substrate: Ceramic bead for titanium and stainless to avoid iron contamination, aluminium oxide when you need a coating anchor profile.
  4. Masking Before Blasting: Bearing seats, sealing faces and threaded features are masked so the media does not change a functional surface.
  5. Deburr and Cosmetics in One Pass: Light burrs, tool marks and handling scratches are removed in the same cycle that produces the matte finish.
  6. Pre-Treatment Ready: Parts can go straight from blasting into anodizing or powder coating without a second cleaning step.

Advantages of Ordering Bead Blasted Parts from Unity Manufacture

back in time

Fast Turnaround

Bead blasting ships in 2 to 4 business days, and can run the same day as a coating when the part is already on site.

crosshair

Precision

No measurable material removal on standard cycles, so dimensions, bores and threads are unaffected. Masking is applied where a surface must stay as-machined.

Custom Finishes

Fine, standard and coarse bead sizes plus ceramic, aluminium oxide and organic media, giving roughness from Ra 0.4 um to Ra 6.3 um.

Material Selection

Aluminium, stainless steel, titanium, carbon steel, brass, copper, magnesium and engineering plastics can all be blasted with the right media.

Blasting Options

Media choice drives roughness, cleanliness and whether any material is removed at all. Here is what we run.

Glass Bead Blasting

The default media for a clean, uniform satin surface. Glass beads clean and peen without cutting, so dimensions stay inside tolerance.

Alternative Media

Different substrates and roughness targets need different media, particularly where iron contamination or a coating anchor profile is a concern.

Ceramic bead (no iron contamination)
Aluminium oxide (anchor profile)
Stainless steel shot
Walnut shell (soft metals)
Plastic media (deflashing)

Surface Roughness Targets

Tell us the Ra you need and we will select media and pressure to hit it, then verify the result before the parts ship.

Ra 0.4 um (near-mirror)
Ra 0.8 um (fine satin)
Ra 1.6 um (standard satin)
Ra 3.2 um (coarse matte)
Ra 6.3 um (heavy matte)

Before & After Blasting

Blasting is usually one step in a sequence rather than the last one. Tell us what comes next and we will prepare the surface accordingly.

Pre-treatment before anodizing
Pre-treatment before powder coating
Stand-alone cosmetic finish

Custom finishes upon request

Need a specific Ra, a masked area, or blasting combined with another finish? Send the requirement with your drawing and we will quote the full sequence.

Overview: What is Bead Blasting?

Bead blasting propels fine spherical media against a surface at controlled pressure. Each bead acts as a tiny peening hammer, cleaning and slightly compressing the surface rather than cutting it. The result is a uniform, low-glare matte finish with tool marks, light burrs and minor handling marks removed.

Because glass and ceramic beads peen instead of cutting, the process removes effectively no material, which is why it is safe on tight-tolerance bores, threads and sealing faces. Roughness is controlled by media size, pressure and cycle time, and ranges from about Ra 0.4 um up to Ra 6.3 um. Blasting is also the standard preparation step before anodizing or powder coating, because it leaves a clean, uniform surface for the coating to bond to.
