What Is ABS?
Why ABS is the default engineering plastic for consumer products, and where its limits push you up to PC or down to HIPS.
ABS is an amorphous thermoplastic blend of acrylonitrile, butadiene and styrene. The butadiene rubber phase absorbs impact without cracking; the styrene gives a hard, glossy surface that paints and plates cleanly; the acrylonitrile contributes chemical and heat resistance. It costs roughly one third of polycarbonate and is far easier to finish.
What ABS does well
ABS holds dimension under load and tolerates 80 to 95 C continuous service. It machines to a clean edge with sharp tooling, takes a 0.8 um surface finish, and bonds with acetone, methyl ethyl ketone and a wide range of structural adhesives. Plated ABS is the standard substrate for automotive trim, nameplates and consumer hardware.
Design limits
ABS will not survive direct sunlight without a UV-stabilised grade or paint, and it is brittle in cold service below about -20 C. Where impact and clarity matter more than cost, polycarbonate wins. Where cost dominates and impact strength can be lower, polystyrene and HIPS are alternatives.

Machining Characteristics of ABS
How the material behaves in the cut, and what that means for tooling, fixtures, cycle time and achievable tolerance.
Sharp polished tools
Dull edges melt the butadiene phase and cause the surface to smear and shine during machining.
Coolant use
Air blast or light mist; aqueous coolants do not interact strongly with ABS but prolonged soaking is unnecessary.
Chip evacuation
ABS chips are static-prone and cling; use compressed air to clear pockets before drilling or tapping.
Tight tolerance
Achievable to about +/-0.10 mm on machined features on stable stock. Tighter tolerances need careful stress-relief planning.
Surface preparation for plating
Direct metallising needs an etched surface; ABS grades sold as platable are formulated to accept electroless plating.
Glue and paint readiness
Paint, plate, glue or print without surface treatment on most grades; wipe with isopropyl alcohol before applying finishes.
Design and Machining Checklist
Practical rules that reduce cost and scrap on ABS parts. Share them with your design team before the drawing is frozen.
- Use 0.8 mm minimum wall thickness and 1.5 mm where the wall is supported over 25 mm.
- Specify generous internal radii of 0.5 mm to avoid brittle fracture in stress-bearing parts.
- Standard threads in ABS strip easily; use metal inserts for parts that are assembled repeatedly.
- Use UV-stabilised grade or paint the surface for any part that sees direct sunlight.
- Plate ABS components for hard, reflective surfaces that mimic metal at a fraction of the cost.
- Consider HIPS or polypropylene when impact resistance is not needed and price is the priority.
Surface Finishing Options
Finishes are selected for corrosion resistance, wear, appearance, electrical behaviour or cleanliness. Specify only what the function needs.
As-Machined
Ra 0.8 to 1.6 um with a clean edge, ready for painting or bonding.
Bead Blasting
Fine bead blast provides a uniform matte surface that hides light tool marks.
Painting
ABS is the benchmark plastic for paint adhesion; two-part polyurethane and acrylic enamels give durable finishes.
Electroless Plating
ABS is the industry-standard substrate for electroless copper/nickel/chrome plating, producing hard, reflective metal finishes.
Adhesive Bonding
ABS bonds with solvent cements (acetone, MEK) and with cyanoacrylate, epoxy and structural acrylic adhesives.
Steam and Solvent Welding
Solvent welding with MEK produces strong, irreversible joints on ABS, used widely in case and enclosure assembly.
